How To Wrap Your Hands: Step By Step
How To Wrap Your Hands: Step By Step Guide.
In this expert walkthrough, our team has created a step by step guide below on how to wrap your hands with boxing stretch wraps for boxing or any combat sports involving the use of boxing gloves.
This guide below is just one of the many templates, you can adjust this style however you wish to suit your wrap length or wrapping preference as this method may not be suitable for your needs.
The goal of all boxing wraps should be to emphasize the stability of the wrist, pad the knuckles & locking in the padding through the joints to create a strong, supportive & effortless fist.
Why Wrap Your Hands?
The two main benefits of wrapping your hands for boxing or other combat sports are adding a layer of moisture protection between your gloves & hands, like wearing a sock under your shoes.
The 2nd benefit more importantly is lowering the risk of hand, finger & wrist injuries that could occur while training.
As stated by Livestrong, "The hands are delicate, and the sport of boxing can easily injure them whether training on the heavy bag or boxing against an opponent."
Before starting, ensure to keep the wrist & hand straight with the hand open and fingers webbed out, any movement may lower the integrity & strength of the wrap,
You may need to also squeeze the fist in certain steps to secure the wrap between the fingers, ensure to keep the wrist & hand straight during these steps also!
For this example, we are using 4 Metre Urban Stretch Boxing Hand Wraps
Step-by-step guide
1. Place the loop of the wrap over the thumb and wrap over the back of the hand towards the pinky side of the wrist, then roll the wrap underneath towards the thumb side of the wrist.
2. Wrap around the wrist joint 3-4 times, ensure to angle the wrap over the wrist joint to maximize stability. (Cross from one side of the wrist joint over to the other where possible.)
Use both a mixture of both methods to maximize wrist support.
3. Once the wrist is complete, cross over from the thumb side of the wrist up over the back of the hand towards the pinky side of the knuckles (1.), the wrap underneath the palm towards the thumb side of the knuckles (2.).
4. Wrap around the knuckles 3-4 times.
5. Wrap from the thumb side of the knuckles over the back of the hand to the pinky side (1.), down around the palm towards the thumb side of the wrist (2.).
6. From here we start a technique called a figure 8 or X-shape in order to lock the knuckle wrap into place. (Take this section slowly & carefully, repetition is key!)
Starting from the thumb side of the wrist, wrap over the back of your hand, around the back of the pinky finger(1.), wrap around the underside of the pinky finger & bring the wrap back out between the ring & pinky finger over the back of the hand towards the pinky side of the wrist (2.), then wrap around the wrist underneath to the thumb side of the wrist (3.).
When wrapping around each finger, squeeze your hand into a fist in order to keep the wrap tight to your joints in order to maintain a naturally formed fist.
7. Once back to the thumb side of the wrist, wrap over the back of your hand to the join in between the ring & pinky finger(1.), wrap around the ring finger & bring the wrap back out between the middle & ring finger to the back of the hand towards the pinky side of the wrist(2.), then wrap around the wrist underneath to the thumb side of the wrist(3.).
Squeeze the fist when wrapping around the ring finger.
8. From the thumb side of the wrist, wrap over the back of your hand, in between the middle & ring finger(1.), wrap underneath the ring finger & bring the wrap back out between the index & middle finger towards the pinky side of the wrist(2.), then wrap around the wrist underneath to the thumb side of the wrist(3.).
Squeeze the fist when wrapping around the middle finger.
9. From the thumb side of the wrist, wrap over the back of your hand, in between the ring & pinky finger(1.), wrap underneath the index finger & bring the wrap back out between the thumb & index finger to the back if the hand, down towards the pinky side of the wrist(2.), then wrap around the wrist underneath to the thumb side of the wrist(3.).
Squeeze the fist when wrapping around the index finger.
10. Once back to the thumb side of the wrist, wrap over the top side of your thumb(1.), over & under the join, back towards the pinky side of the wrist(2.), then wrap around the wrist underneath to the thumb side of the wrist(3.).
Squeeze the fist when wrapping around the thumb.
11. Once the thumb is secure, your wrap should look almost complete, if you have any excess wrap, we recommend going around the wrist again until finished.
